We’re an accounting firm that puts down roots with our clients

We've been part of Tucson's business community since 1978. Not as the biggest firm, or the flashiest. Just a steady presence. Some of our clients have been with us for decades, and that doesn't happen by accident.

Our Story

The roots that started Red Alder

Red Alder grew from a long-established accounting firm founded by David Oase.

As the firm developed, so did the way we supported our clients. The team expanded, relationships grew deeper, and our work began to reach far beyond annual tax returns and filing deadlines.

Today, we work alongside business owners throughout the year, helping them understand their numbers, think through important decisions, and plan more confidently for what lies ahead.

Red Alder reflects the firm we are now: an experienced, team-led business with a shared approach and a long-term commitment to the people we support.

Our name is newer than our roots. The experience, relationships, and care behind the work have been built over decades.

A new identity that finally reflects who we've already become.

Where it all began
With cats walking across his desk, Ken Oase started the business out of his home in Tucson, under the name The Tax Man (before QBO even existed!), built on doing things properly and treating people with care. That commitment has never wavered.

1992

A new chapter, and a new name
David Oase joined the firm as a young man, having spent summers writing bookkeeping software for his father's business on an early IBM computer. In 1992, David took over the firm, moving from Ken's house to our current building, and we became David Oase CPA. With that change came structure, more availability, and year-round support for the clients who needed it.

Through the downturn, together

David Oase CPA has been through hard seasons with clients. During the subprime collapse of 2007–2008, we sat across the table from business owners, families, and professionals trying to make sense of a financial world that felt unstable. We helped clients navigate cash flow, tax decisions, debt, and uncertainty that did not fit neatly into a spreadsheet. That experience still shapes how we work today. We do not disappear when things get complicated.

We moved fully to cloud-based accounting, giving clients real-time visibility into their numbers and making collaboration simpler, faster, and more transparent.

2018

A shift in gear

We began moving beyond traditional tax preparation and compliance work toward a more proactive advisory model. Instead of only helping clients look backward at what already happened, we focused more intentionally on helping them plan ahead, understand their numbers, make better business decisions, and avoid surprises before they became expensive problems.

Continued expansion

As the firm continued to grow, we became more intentional about building the right team around our clients. That meant looking beyond geography to find talented offshore team members who could strengthen our capacity, improve turnaround times, and support more consistent service.

Our name

Why we're called Red Alder

The red alder is a tree known not for showiness or size, but for what it does for everything around it.

It enriches the soil. It stabilizes the land. It creates the conditions for healthy growth without drawing attention to itself. Other things grow better because it's there.

That's the role we want to play for our clients.

We're not here to be the loudest voice in the room or the most impressive name on a business card. We're here to be the steady, grounded presence that helps you feel more capable, clear, and more confident in the decisions you're making.

Grounding

We bring calm to situations that feel stressful or uncertain. When the numbers feel confusing, or the decisions feel heavy, we help you find solid ground.

Resilient

The red alder restores and renews the soil around it. We help our clients build businesses that can withstand pressure, adapt to change, and continue to grow steadily over time.

Most of our clients don't come to us in a moment of calm.

They reach out when something feels off, when the numbers aren't making sense, or when a decision is coming and they're not sure they have the right information to make the right call.

The first thing we do is slow things down, listen, and figure out what's really going on.

From there, we work through it together. We're not just filing a tax return, but painting the bigger picture of what you're building and why.

How we work

The way we work, every day

These aren't poster slogans. They're the filters we run hiring, client work, and hard decisions through. They show up in how the phone gets answered and how invoices get explained.
Heart favourite icon

Heart-first

We lead with compassion, patience, and genuine care, and we choose clients who operate the same way. Emotional intelligence matters here: treating people well, respecting our team, and valuing every person, from front desk to partner, is non-negotiable.

Growing

We work with people who value our advice, are coachable, and take action on the things that move their business forward. Growth isn't accidental; it's a shared mindset. Our clients enjoy working with us, and we enjoy growing alongside them.
Start icon

Authentic

We're real people who say what we mean and follow through. We attract clients who share similar morals and values, who appreciate clarity, and who want to build long-term relationships based on trust rather than posturing.
Expand icon

Adaptable

We work best with clients who are open to new approaches, excited about change, and willing to adjust when something isn't working. Flexibility helps everyone move forward faster.
Interests icon

Playful

We like clients who are fun to work with, who can laugh with us, and who bring a friendly, down-to-earth energy. We're the kind of team you could have a meal with, no bull, no ego, just genuine connection and a comfortable environment.

Legacy

We make decisions with long-term life impact in mind, not just business impact. We're proud to work with people who value family, contribute meaningfully, and bring a sense of responsibility into their work and life.

Clarity

The people behind the work

We’re a tight-knit team with real lives outside of accounting.
That helps us better understand yours.

What our clients say

We'll let them speak for themselves

Before working with David and his team, my previous bookkeeper kept me in the dark. I never had timely financials, and business planning for my Tucson based small business was impossible. Firing her and hiring David and his team was a game changer. David, Chad, and Vanessa make sure I have timely, accurate financials every month, and I can also regularly run my own reports. Working with this team is like having a fractional CFO. They also help me with staff financial KPIs. That level of service (and the fact that they are also very fun people) made me choose them over other accounting firms we interviewed nationwide. If you want accurate books and timely, insightful financial guidance, this is your team!
